A Season in Stats - Sheffield Wednesday

You are probably already aware, I have a keen interest in Sheffield Wednesday statistics (#SWFCSTATS on Twitter). I regular update my blog with statistical updates as the season progresses during key stages of the season.

As the Sky Bet Championship is now complete, below are my picks as the most interesting and insightful statistics from the 2017/18 league term.

- Sheffield Wednesday scored 59 league goals this term, averging 1.3 goals per game

- Of the 59 goals scored, 43 were from open play, 11 set pieces, 4 penalties and 1 counter attack goal

- The Owls averaged 49.9% possession per game

- Pass accuracy was 76.1% as an average over the course of the league campaign

- Sheffield Wednesday averaged 11.9 shots per game

- The Owls received 73 yellow card and 4 red cards during their league campaign

- Atdhe Nuhiu finished Sheffield Wednesday’s top league goalscorer with 11 goals, Gary Hooper was second with 10 and Lucas Joao third with 9 goals

- Adam Reach created the most assists in the league with 11 and Atdhe Nuhiu was second with 5

- Adam Reach featured in every single Owls league fixture this season, making 45 starts and one substitute appearance. He, therefore, completed the most on field minutes with 4063, Tom Lees was second with 2565

- Adam Reach and Atdhe Nuhiu were both awarded (the most) 4 man of the match awards through the course of the league campaign

- Jacob Butterfield racked up the best pass accuracy over the league term for a player featuring in more than ten games with 88.7%. Almen Abdi also had a pass accuracy of 88.7% but on featured in 4 outings for the Owls. Connor Kirby has a pass accuracy of 100% but only featured for 12 minutes this term

- Atdhe Nuhiu won the most aerial challenges this campaign, averging 5.8 per game

- Daniel Pudil was booked the most times this season, receiving 8 yellow cards

- Glenn Loovens was sent of twice in the league, more than any other Wednesday player

- Fernando Forestieri averaged the most shots per game with 2 and also made the most dribbles with 1.8

- Adam Reach created the most key passes per game with 1.6 on average

- Barry Bannan averaged the most passes per game with 62

- Ross Wallace made the most crosses per game, averaging 1.4

- Barry Bannan made the most long passes per game for an outfield player, averaging 4.8

- Sheffield Wednesday averaged 20 crosses per game

- The Owls kept 14 clean sheets in total during their league campaign

- The average goal time that Sheffield Wednesday scored their first goal over the course of league term was in the 40th minute

- The average goal time that Sheffield Wednesday conceded their first goal in the league campaign was in the 43rd minute

- Sheffield Wednesday’s biggest victory was 5-1 and their worst defeat was 4-0

- 29% of the Owls goals came between the 60-75 minute time period

- The average time Sheffield Wednesday remained in the lead during a league fixture is 21.3 minutes, 46.9 drawing and 21.8 trailing

- Sheffield Wednesday conceded at least one goal in 78% of their home matches

- Lucas Joao scored the most goals at Hillsborough in the league with 7

- The most common scoreline at Hillsborough in the league this season was 1-1, this result occured on 4 occasions

- The most common result on the road was 0-0, this also occured on 4 occasions

- Having not overcome Swansea in the 5th round of the FA Cup, Sheffield Wednesday still haven't beaten top division opposition in the FA Cup since their 1993 semi-final win over steel city rivals Sheffield United

- This season, Sheffield Wednesday drew three consecutive away matches in all competitions goalless, the first time of doing so in the clubs history. The last - and only other - second tier side to do this in four consecutive away matches were Grimsby Town in May 1963
