Year after year, season after season, the debate that often gets raised, what is the best league in the world? The Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga all the have credentials to be the top pick amongst fans across the globe for numerous reasons. However, here’s my take as to why the second tier of English football, the Sky Bet Championship is the best league in the world...
Let me start by defining the word ‘best’, the English dictionary states the word is "the highest quality, or being the most suitable or effective type of thing". It is the latter part of that definition that highlights my point in relation to the ELF Championship.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not for one second suggesting that the Championship has a higher quality of players, the football on show is superior or even attracts a wider viewing or television audience, this is not the case. I’m simply stating that English Football League Championship, in my opinion, is the most competitive entertainment competition that football has to offer.

The uncertainty and unpredictability of the league is like no other, the Championship has also certainly become more competitive over recent years due to financial fair play restrictions, although some clubs choose to abide by those rules, whereas others do not.
The statement ‘they can beat anybody on their day’ is often used generically across the globe in football, although, I personally think this term can be applied more so in the Sky Bet Championship as twenty-four teams over forty-six games battle out a long, intense and demanding campaign.
The £110 million prize for gaining promotion to the Premier League is literally, slowly but surely becoming a twenty-four team lottery.
Furthermore, is there anything more entertaining than the four team play-off fight at the end of the season? Yes, the World Cup and Euros, the Champions League and quite possibly the FA or League Cup at its latter stages, but, you get my point. What a way to end a league term, despite the jubilant highs and devastating lows in the play-off final.

As a supporter of a Championship club, I have come to realise, fixture by fixture, your expectations in this league must be zero and consequently the reward when your club is victorious is bliss, maybe this because I support Sheffield Wednesday? Probably not, ask any supporter of a Championship football club, I’m sure they would agree.
I guess each club is awaiting a fortuitous season of over achievement or for a once in a lifetime billionaire to come knocking and take ownership. Until then, most teams will have to hang in the balance between the glory of promotion to the Premier League or the League 1 relegation despair, that is why I think the Sky Bet Championship is the best football league in the world.
