Joey Pelupessy: Dutch football writer Michael Statham discusses Sheffield Wednesday’s newest recruit

Sheffield Wednesday confirmed on Thursday evening they had completed the signing of Heracles captain Joey Pelupessy. On completion of a medical, 24-year-old Pelupessy has become Owl’s boss Jos Luhukay’s first signing for the club.

This week I caught up with Dutch football writer Michael Statham to discuss the player. You may remember Michael due to him interviewing Glenn Loovens and Joost van Aken on previous occasions for Football-Oranje.com Michael gave his insight on the current Dutch defensive-midfielder who has now completed a permanent move to S6.

Thankyou for joining me today Michael. Many Sheffield Wednesday have never heard of Joey Pelupessy, so, first and foremost, who is he?  ‘Pelupessy has played for Heracles Almelo since 2014, having signed for the Dutch Eredivisie side in 2014 from league rivals FC Twente. The 24-year-old midfielder was made captain of the mid-table side in the summer.’

What are Pelupessy’s key attributes? ‘Playing as a deep-lying playmaker allows Pelupessy to dictate play between the lines and have a key role in breaking up play and set up attacks with simple passing to teammates. He's energetic, consistently good on the ball and his leadership qualities will be important.’

Are there any particular areas of weakness Pelupessy would need to strengthen to adapt to Championship football? ’Playing in the Eredivisie doesn't usually demand a huge physical presence nor intensity in your play. I think Pelupessy will be fine dealing with both of these issues as his position allows that little bit of extra time to pick a pass and avoid some of those gritty battles. In terms of the player himself, he doesn't have a knack for chipping in with goals or assists.’

Sam Hutchinson typically plays the defensive midfield role ‘when’ and ‘if’ he is fully fit. Would you expect Pelupessy to fall straight into the starting eleven over or be used as a squad player? ‘I would expect Pelupessy to be rotated like most Championship players. Competition with Hutchinson would be tight depending on form and I would expect no clear winner in the team out of those two players as it would depend on the type of game Jos Luhukay would like to play.’

Jos Luhukay recently took charge of Sheffield Wednesday and Pelupessy has become his first signing, are their any previous links between the two? I’m guessing Pelupessy must have been on his radar for some time. ‘I wouldn't have been surprised had Luhukay been watching Pelupessy more closely in his time in Germany - when the midfielder was beginning to stand out more and more in the Heracles midfield. However, previous to that, there are no clear links between the two men. Like Feyenoord's Miquel Nelom, also linked with Wednesday, Luhukay is most likely looking at players from his native Netherlands to try and add to his squad.’

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Michael for answering my questions, you can follow Michael on Twitter @EredivisieMike
